2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Era of the Croaking Craze.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Considering a gathering of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Frogs are anything but new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a niche presence. Yet, their prevalence has markedly exploded in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are legitimate Frog Games.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To understand this phenomenon, I conducted a deep dive into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The results paint a clear picture: a consistent uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's elevated place in the cultural zeitgeist is partially evident elsewhere, such as the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. But, the wave in gaming looks uniquely powerful.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

In my opinion, this is a shift I can fully endorse. Frogs offer built-in creative potential for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are perfectly suited to be designed as memorable characters that tend to be a highlight in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and sticky tongues enable a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.

Several the featured titles clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year so far.

When these games are received positively—and traditionally, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be witnessing a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
