Colombia's President Declares 'I Would Resort to Weapons Once More' if American Forces Invades.

Donald Trump along with Colombia's president have intensified the rhetoric of their exchange, heightening tensions between the two countries following US forces targeted Venezuela in an operation to oust Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power.

"He operates drug factories and processing labs and is not going to be doing it very long," Trump remarked.

Growing Threats and Claims

Talking to the press on Sunday, the US president threatened analogous use of force against Bogotá, stating the nation is “very sick too” and led by a problematic figure who likes making the drug and selling it to the US."

While Colombia is the world’s largest source of the narcotic, authorities have found no indication that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally connected to the illicit industry.

A Strained Relationship

Colombia has long been a staunch collaborator of the US in the struggle against narcotics trade and enjoyed wide political approval in the US capital, yet ties have deteriorated markedly following Trump assumed the presidency.

The nation's illicit drug economy is largely controlled by illegal armed groups including one major cartel, another leftist insurgency and breakaway groups of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), a large contingent of whom disbanded after a landmark accord.

Petro's Strong Rebuttal

When asked whether military intervention comparable to Venezuela was a possibility regarding Colombia, Trump said: "It sounds good to me personally."

Petro, an ex-guerrilla fighter who demobilised in the 1990s, rejected Trump's claims. "I am no an illegitimate leader and certainly not a drug trafficker," he declared.

"Trump speaks without information. Cease defaming me," he wrote in a message.

"Should American forces attack civilians, they will turn into a multitude of fighters in the hills. And if they detain the nation's leader, which a large part of the population admires and supports, they will provoke the ‘jaguar’ of the people," he admonished.

From Guerrilla to President

Petro spent some years as a young man belonging of the leftist M-19 armed organization although reports indicate to have ever engaged in fighting. Following his disarmament, he participated in writing the constitutional rewrite over three decades ago subsequently becoming a respected lawmaker. He served as mayor of Bogotá before winning the nation's highest office.

"I made a vow to never again hold arms again ... but for the homeland I would take up weapons once more," he vowed.

Increased Security along with Broad Opposition

Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the president’s security detail had received additional support.

Many among Colombia’s political right have allied themselves with Trump's stance, however, leaders from across Colombian politics have condemned the notion of American military action targeting Colombia.

Diplomatic and Financial Strains

Washington withdrew the president's entry visa subsequent to he urged American soldiers to disobey orders that violate law. Months later, it placed financial sanctions targeting Petro, his spouse and various key allies.

Simultaneously the US was building up its troop levels in the Caribbean and targeting vessels thought to carry drugs to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces have also conducted strikes on maritime targets in Pacific waters off the Colombian coast.
