Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the UK's MoD.
The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our aircraft utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of entry passages leading to the depot... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.
Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This strike shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey said.
UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of thousands of UK service members deployed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who threaten our safety, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."
In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.
The UN says Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in both countries.
