Debunking Venezuela Celebration Footage and AI Images of Nicolás Maduro.
AI-generated images claiming to depict Nicolás Maduro under arrest following his apprehension by the American authorities have garnered many millions of impressions online.
How Fake Pictures of the President Appeared Within Hours
The first inauthentic AI image apparently displaying him being escorted off a plane surfaced within hours. The picture was not shared any verified government accounts; it was instead published on the platform X by an account purporting to be an “AI video art enthusiast”.
Our analysis used Google’s SynthID, confirming the picture was created or altered with AI tools.
Additional synthetic visuals started circulating in the subsequent period, appearing to show different views of the leader detained. Noticeable identifying marks on these images show they originated from an Instagram account named ultravfx.
SynthID says these additional images were similarly created or altered AI technology.
Real Photo Released but Fabrications Continued
Donald Trump released the initial authentic image of Nicolás Maduro handcuffed aboard the USS Iwo Jima on Saturday morning. However, despite the authentic image was published, AI-generated pictures continued to spread but were altered to include the grey tracksuit seen on Maduro.
Online investigation show these updated fakes were originally uploaded on TikTok by a digital art profile. Again, SynthID found these further images were produced with generative artificial intelligence.
