An defence official has confirmed that the MoD is actively looking into the potential security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, while staff have been told to refrain from discussing classified matters in all cars.
Safety Advice for MoD Personnel
During a recently aired appearance on LBC, a defence minister addressed reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to talk about classified material while travelling in China-made cars.
He stated that the ministry is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however noted that security is a concern in all modern vehicles.
We have a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a secret classification in any car, due to the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone worried about safety.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using every cars from China, the minister replied: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”
Wider Security Context
The announcement comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use kill switches in Chinese electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable public transport and bring chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly directing laser beams at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.
The wider security situation underscores the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all aspects of official operations, including vehicle usage to discussions practices.
