In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.
"Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The September revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the position of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Discussions Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.
After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
