TikTok Grants The Community Power to Limit AI-Generated Media in Personal Streams

The platform is rolling out a new feature that enables them to cut down on the volume of artificial intelligence-produced content appearing in their timelines. This initiative comes as the platform revealed that it presently contains over 1 thousand million AI-generated clips.

Trial and Implementation

This change is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a global release. This shift coincides with a increase in AI content, spurred by recent video-generation tools.

AI Proliferation Online

Recent reports that almost one in 10 of the fastest-growing content creators on a popular video site only show content made by AI. A large amount of this material is considered “AI slop”, a label for poor-quality, factory-style content that is frequently illogical or bizarre.

“We know from our community that a lot of users like content produced via AI tools, including AI artwork to informative clips, and we want to provide users the power to adjust the amount of that, based on their own likes,” said a platform representative.

AI on the Platform

The service shared that there are currently over a billion videos on its network identified as AI-generated. Overall, over 100 million pieces of content are added to the platform each day, making clips made by AI a relatively small portion of its complete catalog.

User Control Features

Viewers will be able to limit or boost the amount of AI content they view by using the content preference feature in the platform and choosing AI-made media. Further subjects that are already be controlled under the tool include news, style, aesthetics, and choreography.

Content Labeling and Policies

The platform’s policies oblige users to identify lifelike artificially created content, and it forbids malicious deepfakes of celebrities or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking artificial content that is unmarked can be removed under its community policies.

Additionally, the platform will from now on apply an AI-generated watermark to content created with its built-in AI features, or identified by an cross-platform project for spotting AI-generated material. This measure is designed to help prevent users from attempting to circumvent the disclosure requirement.

AI Literacy Programs

The company is also introducing a two million dollar educational fund for experts and groups to develop educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will assist non-profit groups dedicated to teaching computer science.

Moderation Strategy

The platform has justified its content review process, amid controversy over intentions to cut jobs for a large number of content moderators in the UK. TikTok is set to cut a significant number of roles in its user protection team in London, with labor groups and internet security professionals expressing worry that people are being substituted by AI moderation.

A trust and safety lead stated that staff-based oversight would still have a role, but automated tools can shield workers by eliminating the most harmful content before it is viewed by people. The platform announced a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content handled by safety staff over the past year due to reliance on its automated systems.

It is vital to balance people and machines to maintain a secure environment,” the official commented. “We’ll have people as part of that process, but we also think it’s extremely critical to reduce exposure to dangerous material as quickly as possible, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is really helping us process content quickly.”
