Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to question particular decisions made by the chair umpire, following the system already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
